We use the Plastibell technique - Plasti means to surgically change; bell because it looks like a bell and is made of plastic.

Dr. Hansen will make a small incision on the end of the foreskin, the end of the foreskin will be pulled over the ring. A string will be securely fastened around the ring of the bell. Once the string is secured Dr. Hansen will remove the handle and the ring remains. This stops the blood supply to the distal (end) of the foreskin and it will slowly dry and detach. It will separate off with the ring, similar to the belly button, in approximately 5-7 days. It can separate in as little as 3 days or as many as 10. It takes the ring, string and foreskin off with it. Do not be concerned if it falls off early. It is essential that your son be seen at 7 days post procedure, or phone consultation at Dr. Hansen’s discretion, to ensure normal and complete separation of the plastibell.

We utilize 4 methods of pain control: EMLA cream, Advil, local Xylocaine anesthetic injection as a ring block and sugar water. He will be given sugar water during the procedure to reduce pain.

BENEFITS OF PLASTIBELL:

  1. Minimal bleeding - because the foreskin is tied off with the string.  Bleeding is the main complication of circumcision, but it is rare and if it occurs will usually be within 10 min of the procedure. This can be managed in the office. There will be some spot bleeding over the next 4 diaper changes.

  2. Minimal post procedure homecare - take your son home. Care for him as usual. You may use Vaseline for the first 24 hours to reduce adherence of the fresh circumcision to the absorbent diaper.

  3. Nice clean circumcision line - it is the ring and the string making the circumcision line.
