Our Doctors

Dr. Anna Aquino

Dr. Anna Aquino (pronounced a-KEE-no) was born in the Philippines and spent much of her childhood in Saudi Arabia before moving to Canada in 2001. Her family settled in Surrey and she went on to finish her bachelor’s degree and medical school at the University of British Columbia.

Patients may have met her initially during her residency, where she worked mainly with Dr. Alister Frayne and was mentored by all of the other doctors along the way. Finishing residency in 2017 fortunately lined up with the opportunity to locum for Dr. Frayne during his sabbatical. She spent the next few years locuming around the Langley and Surrey communities, gaining experience and learning from each different practice. She will settle down and take over Dr. Frayne’s practice as of April 2021 when he plans to retire. She is extremely grateful and excited for the opportunity to join the vibrant practice and continue its tradition of cradle to grave care.

Dr. Aquino “retired” from obstetrics and inpatient care in her early practice years, focusing instead on providing the best outpatient care. She continues to have a special interest in prenatal and pediatric care, and also performs IUD insertions in the office.

On the personal side, Dr. Aquino recently welcomed her first child (a boy!) in 2019. She strives to balance her busy work schedule with family time. When not in the office she enjoys cooking, baking, going on walks and adventures with her little family, and travelling. She is also not a stranger to online shopping and can offer recommendations for local lifestyle and children’s brands should it be of interest.

Dr. Mark Gulka

Dr Mark O. Gulka was born and raised in small town Saskatchewan. He attended the University of Saskatchewan, obtaining an undergraduate honors degree in physiology and biochemistry and then worked in medical research for several years before completing his medical degree in 1992. He subsequently did a family medicine residency at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton , University of Alberta. This followed with a move south for family medicine practice in Washington state from 1995-2004, where his four sons were born, before his family relocated back to Canada in Langley. He has since done family practice, and extensive hospital based practice at Langley Memorial Hospital, as a hospitalist and surgical assistant, for well over a decade. He joined Fort Family Practice at the start of 2020, including hospital coverage.

Dr. Gulka also has additional training and credentials in sports medicine and addiction medicine and is a UBC clinical instructor in family medicine.

Mark enjoys cycling, running- especially on BC’s fantastic mountain trails, racquet sports, nordic and alpine skiing, and most anything outdoors that involves vigor. On the sedentary side, reading, movies, games (not video) and trying to build some cooking skills occupy him.

Overall, he believes in a sensible and rational approach to medical care, being a strong advocate for maximizing healthy living, and using experience and evidence-based medicine to minimize medications, testing and treatments, while pursuing those that are likely to result in a net health benefit. His goal is to help patients get the best out of themselves, towards achieving or maintaining good health.

Dr. Steve Hansen

I have enjoyed practicing medicine in Langley since 1988. It is a privilege to practice here, to be involved with the Langley Maternity Clinic, and be a part of the joy of seeing others start their families.

Langley is the community where we have grown as a family. All five of our children were born at LMH. Through education, athletics and engagement with many terrific families, Langley is our home.

In our free time, my wife and I love to spend time outdoors with our now grown family.

Dr. Lucinda McQuarrie

Following Medical School at UBC Vancouver (Grad '07) and Residency in Prince George, I returned home to Langley in 2009. In September 2010, I permanently and joined the Fort Family Practice. I enjoy the variety of providing primary care to people of all ages, in health and illness. Having grown up across Canada, I appreciate the tapestry of people and cultures and how this affects medical care at all ages and stages.

Outside of work, my husband helps to keep life balanced as I mother our children, enjoy volunteering at church, and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities for pleasure and fitness.

Dr. Ashley Song

I was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba (go Jets!)

I’ve spent my childhood playing in snow forts, sledding down hills, and chasing after my two brothers. I went on to complete my undergraduate degree at the University of Manitoba. I decided to follow my passion for travel and completed my medical degree abroad, completing my clinical years in Michigan, where I also completed my residency training.

I ended up returning home to Canada, and ultimately followed my parents to Beautiful British Columbia!

I am excited to take on Dr. Grace Brouwers patient panel, join Fort Family Practice, and to get to know the Langley community!

Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my family, long distance running, and finding the best local restaurants.

Dr. Hester Vivier

Dr. Hester Vivier was raised on a tobacco and cattle farm in Zimbabwe, Africa. She completed her medical degree in 1987 at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, where she also met her husband, Dr. Andre Van Wyk. After a year's internship at Tygerberg Hospital, in Cape Town, South Africa, the two worked in England, Newfoundland and Manitoba before eventually settling in Langley, B.C. in 2002. Not only did she survive the weather shock, from hot Africa to northern Canadian winters. She can also tell you more heartwarming stories of Canadian small towns, where she started her family of 5 children, than can many native Canucks.

She joined Fort Family Practice in 2007 and currently works part time at the office and performs surgical assists at Langley Memorial Hospital (LMH). She does not currently have admitting privileges at LMH, meaning that when her patients are admitted to hospital they are cared for by a hospitalist, or hospital-based family physician.

Dr. Vivier is also very involved in the Hear Africa Foundation, a non-profit society whose mandate is to create sustainable solutions to the issues of poverty, social support, health care, education and infrastructure development in Zimbabwe. Amidst this very busy schedule, she also managed to earn a Master's of Business Administration in 2012 at Trinity Western University and is using these newfound skills to improve our clinic management. As any of her patients or colleagues can attest, one would never guess how prolific and busy this physician is by the calm, thoughtful nature she brings to her practice. In her spare time she enjoys reading, knitting, gardening and traveling.

In Memory: Dr. Mark Miller

It is with heavy hearts that Fort Family Practice must announce to our patients the passing of Dr. Mark Miller.

A colleague but also a friend, and pillar member of our practice. He will be greatly missed within the community and within our office especially. We offer our deepest sympathies to his family and his friends. In keeping with Dr. Miller’s passions, we at Fort Family Practice have made donations to the Nature Trust of British Columbia and Wirthhats.com. These are 2 initiatives which Dr. Miller supported.
