Prior to your appointment:

Purchase at the Pharmacy:

  • Infant Advil (200mg/5ml) for BEFORE and Infant Tylenol/Tempra (80 mg/ml) for AFTER

  • EMLA Cream (numbing cream). Not the EMLA patch. Only a small tube is needed. Cost should be approximately $15-$22.

Preparation: Start Preparation at Home 1 hour before appointment  (please do in order)

  1. Give baby the Infant Advil (40mg/ml or 200mg/5 ml). Dosage by weight:

    • 6-8 lbs: 0.75 ml (30 mg)

    • 8-10 lbs: 1.0 ml (40 mg)

    • 10-12 lbs: 1.25 ml (50 mg)

  2. Feed baby. Give baby a good feed; STOP feed 1 hour prior to your appt.

    • This is important so that the baby will not be too full, but satisfied and their tummy is settled when they arrive at the office. Please do not feed again until after the procedure.

  3. Apply the EMLA cream on the baby's penis from the base to the tip. Apply a fairly thick application. Wrap baby's penis in Saran Wrap (to keep the cream on so it does not soak into the diaper.) If baby pees after EMLA cream has been applied, just change his diaper as usual and reapply the cream. **Bring the EMLA cream to appointment in case you need to reapply at the office.

The circumcision takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. Be prepared to be in the office at least 1 hour in total. Dr. Hansen will administer local anesthetic when you arrive (to enhance baby’s comfort). The nurse or Dr. Hansen will explain the procedure and answer any questions you may have. Following the circumcision your son will be swaddled (bring a cozy blanket) and observed in the office until Dr. Hansen is confident that he is doing well and ready for discharge. A follow-up appointment 6-7 days post procedure to assess healing and assess your son’s weight. This will be booked on the day of the circumcision.
